A “water theme song” poetry by Su Shi, Sung
Dynasty.
When can we see a moon that will brightly
shine?
With a glass of wine in hand, I ask the
clear sky.
Don’t know what the palace is like up in the
heaven,
And what year is it tonight, even?
I wish to take on the wind to ride to the
moon,
But I fear the soaring high jade towers and
marble temples,
Which may make me freightening too soon!
I start to dance chasing the shadow of the
moon,
Am I really in the real World this very
soon?
The moon passes the corner of the gorgeous towers,
Into the lace curtain window,
Shining onto a sleepless man with a shadow!
The moon should not bear any hatred or
feeling,
How come it always becomes a full moon when
people are parting?
In life, man can have sadness or happiness,
parting or reunion,
For the moon, it can appear cloudy or clear,
crescent or full moon,
This has always been like this since the
times of old moment.
May I wish we all live longer,
And share the same bright moon thousand
miles apart together!
